I actually came across this group of 1960’s posters while
researching ideas for the book we were making for computers class. While I did
not end up going this direction, I still thought that the typography during
this particular time period, directly mostly to the Californian region, was
definitely worth sharing. Though the type was not always completely readable
right away in each poster, it became it’s own image and was also used as a
background most of the time. In this way, the posters had a strong two-dimensional
feel by sharing the same plane as the vocal image. Also in posters such as ‘Playboy’
and ‘Onward’, the text helped make up the pictures, filling in the space of a
bodice or a vase.
